The ADAA says that “Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S.,
affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population
every year. Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, yet only 36.9% of those suffering receive treatment.”

I never understood how prevalent anxiety was in our society, until we opened our store in Illinois. It’s stunning how many people we talk with daily who are struggling. (Only then did I understand why there were so many commercials about depression medications on TV.)

And  today, as our world finds its way through a pandemic and economic uncertainty – it’s even more important to understand what anxiety is, and what may help.

What is anxiety?

Definition: Merriam-Webster dictionary

n. anx·​i·​ety

: apprehensive uneasiness or nervousness
usually over an impending or anticipated ill : a state of being anxious

: mentally distressing concern or interest

: a strong desire sometimes mixed with
doubt, fear, or uneasiness

What does Anxiety feel like?

We all have times when we feel unusually anxious. Maybe it’s for an interview, an
exam, a competition – or simply just your everyday life. Today, with the
complexity of our world – our bodies may be feeling even more ‘off’ than
normal.

Our brains and nervous systems are wired to deal with ‘threats’. Threats are
anything we perceive to cause us danger, damage or harm. When your threat
response is triggered, are you aware of how your body responds? Do you have a
stomach ache, increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, a knot in your
stomach?

The first step in regaining your balance is self awareness:

1.    know when you’re feeling threatened

2.    be aware of how your body responds

Limit Screens

I do this for my kids all the time, because they’re still not good at self-regulating the
time they spend on Netflix, Video Games or Social Media. But recently, I found
it to be helpful to limit the amount of time I’m online reading the updates on
the economy or pandemic. The more time I spent, the more anxious I grew. So
now, I’ve limited myself to 30 minutes in the morning and evening – and it’s
helped immensely.

 

Diet

So many things in our lives are outside of what we can actually control, but how
you eat is an area of your life where you can take action. There are many
different healthy ways to eat but the bottom line is that increasing your
consumption of fruits and vegetables and decreasing your intake of processed
food can make a difference in your body’s ability to manage your anxiety.

Exercise

Research continues to confirm that at least 150 minutes of exercise a week is great for
your mind and body! And it doesn’t have to be something like training for a
marathon. Just a brisk walk is all the intensity you need. Set a sustainable
goal for yourself, and pair it with something like being in nature. (Fresh air
is so helpful if you’re staying at home!)

Sleep

Sleep can be tricky when you’re feeling anxious. If you are setting yourself up well
for good sleep and still struggle to fall asleep or sleep through the night,
try to let go of any judgment about that struggle. Research has found that we
need an average of  7-8 hours of sleep per night. Having a standard routine, stretching, turning off screens are all great ways to set yourself up for a good night sleep.
