Have you heard about CBG? CBG is a cannabinoid catching the attention of researchers and consumers alike. But what is it, and why is it garnering so much attention?

WHAT IS CBG?

The acronym CBG stands for Cannabigerol, which is a naturally occurring cannabinoid that can be found in hemp. It’s one of over 100+ cannabinoids found in hemp plants. Because it is present in low levels (usually less than 1%) in most hemp strains, CBG is called "a minor cannabinoid". CBG is also often referred to as the “Mother of all Cannabinoids” because it is the first phytocannabinoid synthesized in hemp that converts into other plant-based cannabinoids. Essentially, CBG comes first – and as the plants go through a flowering cycle – CBGA transforms into different cannabinoids like CBD, THC, CBN and others. (There’s a considerable amount of science to explain, but this sums it up!)

CBD VS. CBG

CBG and CBD are both cannabinoids that interact with the endocannabinoid system, and they both are non-psychotropic. (Another words, they won’t get you feeling ‘high’ like THC) But, the primary distinction between the two is the way they interact with the endocannabinoid system. Different from CBD, CBG supports the endocannabinoid system by directly interacting with CB1 and CB2 receptors. Together, CB1 and CB2 receptors regulate neurohormones which actively affect physiological processes including mood, and pain response. When cannabinoids like CBG interact with these receptors, it activates a response and produces physiological changes.

BENEFITS OF CBG

CBG is growing in popularity as a result of the host of potential benefits the cannabinoid has to offer. While there is still a very limited amount of research to guide consumers, limited studies have hinted at CBG being particularly beneficial as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotectant and antibacterial agent.
